My first mod was removing the resonator. The car suffered from heat soak because it was too close to the radiator fan.
I then connected a 3" diameter plumbing pipe that I got from the hardware store to the intake box. It was a pipe with a 90 degree bend and about 8" long and I pointed it towards the fender for colder air.
This gets rid of the heat problem and the sound problem. After that I got a drop-in k&n, and that gave me pretty much the same sound as a CAI. Definitely some performance gain as well.

can you post some pics of that?
and what kind of plumbing pipe, pvc? or some other kind?

how do you connect a pipe to the hole that the resonator removal leaves? i am thinking about doing this, but i want to have everything on hand before i do it.

thanks

right here.   intake hoses

em, that doesn't really tell me much. its just a picture and a bunch of sizes...

yeah, and did you look at what that is a picture of and what that is a bunch of sizes of? hmm...

look at the link again and then look at the question you posted.

man, i was just trying to help. what is up with the attitude?

yep, take one of those things (you can get something similar at the home depot) and hose clamp it to the lip on the bottom of the air box and then string your pipe from there.

didn't mean to sound rude. you just didn't specify how i was supposed to use whatever i was looking at, which i also didn't really know. i've never seen a part like that before, so i don't really know what it is lol. i just needed a better explanation than 'here, look' lol. sorry.

Thanks oricle, but I still don't understand how it actually attaches. Hose clamp? Is that what I need to get?

cbogey88, sorry that i took it personally. in my mind i thought it was self-explanatory. sorry.

yeah, so you gotta measure the diameter of the opening of the stock air box. get an aluminum or plastic tubing that is similar in diameter preferably. then get a rubber hose size that is close to the diameter. the hose can be a bit smaller, since it can stretch a bit. then use one clamp on the airbox side and one on the tubing side.

the link that i told you about shows both the clamps and the hoses that you would need. but like oricle said, you can probalby find basically the same thing cheaper elsewhere.

Are there any CELs coming on from doing this?
[/quote]

nope...you are still using the original intake

Back in the days of my ZX2 I removed both resonators ... One where the filter was and then one between the MAF and the throttle body ... Plus I soldered a resistor in place of the MAF to "trick" the MAF to think the air was hotter than it was so it would take in more air when it was cool ... or something ... Anyway, who knows what all that did for performance but it sounded great.

Part of me was thinking of a CAI but I think that if I'm not going to see any improvement from removing the stock intake/resonator system, I'll just get a K&N and be done with it. I really wish this car had about 20hp more than it does.

just got a cel after doing it about 50 miles ago haven't figured it out yet but it definetly came from the removal. any ideas???

If you have a cel....it is not from the removal of the resonator.
It is from something you did....
disconnect/connect the sensors with the battery still connect.
forgot to connect something back up.

what azmz3 said.

just removing the resonator wouldnt do it. you must have messed something up during the process.

if all else fails, reconnect the resonator, go back to the dealership and play dumb.

it was nothing i did. i have been working on cars for 15 years and graduated UTI. i know what i doing

just took out the resonator today after putting in the umnitza sri. i actually installed the sri first, with the resonator still in the car. i noted the gains of the sri (pretty sweet, actually). then i removed the resonator. the only thing i can tell different is once you get moving on the highway, it's a "little" easier to accelerate. but then again, removing a big hunk of plastic that's blocking extra cold air will do that. :)

and best of all....no CEL's!!!
